Volunteer Spotlight: Joe and Betty Szymborski
Joe and Betty Szymborksi opened their home to their first boxer, Moxie, 20 years ago. Little did they know that their home would one day be known as the “CBR Hospital and Maternity Ward,” where they lovingly foster the sick wigglebutts, as well as pregnant wigglebutts. Moxie stole their hearts with the energy and personality that boxers are famous for. She jumped the fence, helped herself to some chewing in the house, and would even knock cigarettes out of Joe’s mouth!
Betty teaches first grade and special education courses at Ft. Bragg. Her commitment to a schedule has seen many fosters through tough times. When a new foster comes in, Betty maps out their medication, and feeding schedules, and necessary training activities. In their experience, they have found that consistent care and training helps their fosters heal and adjust.
Joe is a former high school science teacher and Veteran, who served in Desert Storm. He loves spending time with their fosters and making a home cooked meal. Joe and Betty love to camp and see the country in their RV. Some lucky fosters have been as far as Texas and Pennsylvania!
They are currently fostering sweet Linda as well as Ms. Shelby and her lovely pups. They say the most rewarding part of volunteering with CBR is watching their fosters transform and finally find their furever home.
The Szymborskis would like to give a special thanks for Dr. Jenny Rodriguez of Riverbark Animal Hospital in Spring Lake, NC. Her expertise, knowledge, and care have helped so many of their fosters.
