January 23, 2011... Lucy is a lovable 9 year old bulldog-boxer mix. Up until she came to us Lucy had a really deplorable life. She was owned by an animal hoarder that kept her and her pals outside in crates or in a chicken coop (we think it may have been for her whole life but so much is unknown about her). It appears that Lucy has had multiple litters and her level of neglect when we first picked her up was unbelievable. Lucy was skin and bones and probably had never been bathed; her mouth and teeth had been unattended for years as well. She rode in the car very well all the way from South Carolina, about a 90 minute ride. Likewise when we went to the vet for the very first time, all Lucy wanted was scratches and kisses and to have someone to lean against.
When introduced to our very submissive boxer and boston terrier, Lucy didn't know quite what to make of them and was very unhappy with having to share her new space with them. Lucy may have sensed their uber-submission and taken advantage of that. We have not tried to reintroduce them until we are sure that it's the right time. As of now we think Lucy would probably do best in a home where she is the only dog or with smaller dogs that she doesn't feel she has to dominate. On the flip side, Lucy has never tried to assert herself with myself, my husband or our one year old daughter. She is not food aggressive or sensitive to being touched on her body anywhere. As I said before, she just wants love, love, love and more love!
We are still working closely with the vet as Lucy is heartworm positive so she will be started on her pills soon. She has since gained a lot of weight (hurray!) and likes to hang out in the backyard but isn't all that energetic or playful. Potty training is coming along; since she has lived outside her whole life she is having difficulty understanding that you shouldn't just "go" wherever or whenever you feel like it. That being said, she loves to get treats when she takes care of her business outside! More to come after our vet visit this week!
