BASIL
February 1, 2010...  Basil continues to be a sweet loving boy at home, and has enjoyed family time at home over Christmas.  He needs more training, but is an eager learner, and is glad to give kisses for treats.  Basil is mostly blind from sclerosis, and is an energetic runner outside at times, so he needs to be supervised off leash, just to make sure he doesn't run into anybody.

July 14, 2009...  Basil was neutered July 8, and is doing fine!  His geriatric blood profile was normal, and he will be ready for heartworm treatment soon.  He now weighs a healthy 59 pounds, but needs to gain a few more pounds to be really robust.  He has been playing a lot off leash outdoors with his foster fur sister (they have been rolling in the grass and chasing each other), and has been going on a lot of leash walks with his foster mom.  He behaves better when other dogs walk by, and obeys his mom when she tells him to "leave".  Basil is such a sweetheart and good boy, but has a mischievous side too!  He chewed out of his plastic crate a few weeks ago when his foster mom was at work.  Now, he has a strong metal crate that is a lot bigger, and he is happier in it.  He still needs some activities to keep him busy, and loves his peanut butter and treats for going in his crate.  He hasn't quite caught onto the kong toy yet.  Basil loves to run around and jump when his mom comes home, but always comes when called.  He has been very polite to children and all people he has met on walks.  The one place Basil is defensive and barks is when he is inside a car, and someone comes right up to the window (maybe because his vision is not perfect).  Once his mom opens the car door, he is friendly and calms down.  His foster fur sister, Cherokee, lets him be dominant most of the time, but they are both pretty easy going.  He will be a good friend to whomever adopts him.

May 26, 2009...  Basil was scheduled for neutering on May 14, but had a 1-minute mild seizure as soon as the vet started pre-medication.  Basil recovered right away and is fine, but needs a geriatric blood profile before he can be neutered or start heartworm treatment.  This Superchem/CBC/T4 test costs $125, his neuter costs $100, and the heartworm treatment is about $400.  Any donations you can make will help this boy with his medical treatment.

Basil is such a joy and always happy.  He now weighs 53 pounds, and needs to put on a few more pounds.  He still drinks a lot of water and pants sometimes.  He is enjoying the summer weather and loves to roll in the grass and run and chase his foster fur sister.  He is also getting a little bossy.  Once I come home, he wants to follow me around for a while.  If I go out in the yard without him, he pushes the screen door open to follow me.  If I am cooking in the kitchen, he politely looks in to see if he can have anything.  Most of the time, he waits patiently in the living room.  He also likes to help me drive, and loves to lie in the front seat next to me.  He is a great buddy.

May 6, 2009...  Basil continues to be a happy, loving boy.  He is a great snuggler.  He went to Paw Jam in Charlotte 2 weeks ago, and behaved well with people, but wanted to dominate all the dogs he met.  We're hoping after he is neutered this coming week, he will calm down and get along with all dogs.  He was very friendly with all dogs when he first came to his foster mom's house, but has gained so much confidence, that he wants to protect his territory now.  He is very caring to his foster fur sister, and would be a great companion for any family.  After he is neutered, he can start heartworm treatment.  He loves to run and jump when I get home.  I've never seen a dog jump so high.  He also loves rawhide bones.  He's learning more commands with time, and walks well on the leash.

April 21, 2009 ... Basil is such a good boy.  He is learning to sit before food, and only wishes his foster mom would feed him a lot more.  He really loved the bologna and hamburgers he had over Easter, but likes almost anything, even pancakes and molasses made with flour and water.  He is perfectly house trained and will go into his crate willingly for a treat.  He is a very easy going, happy boy.  He lets his foster mom know how happy he is every morning and every time she comes home by coming up and hugging her.  Sometimes, when they are playing, he gets a little too excited and jumps on his mom, and needs to be corrected.  His foster mom tells him to "calm down", and "be nice", and he settles down right away.  He loves his foster fur sister, Cherokee, and they are best buddies.  He's on Heartgard to treat heartworms, and is putting on weight.  His mom is really impressed by how attentive and intelligent he is.

April 12, 2009...  Basil is such a sweetie pie.  He is always ready to cuddle on the couch, and give kisses and hugs when he is really happy.  He doesn't want to miss out on anything.  When I come home, he runs and bounces around the yard with his foster fur sister to let off energy.  If he strays too far into the front yard, I call him, and he comes right back to me.  He has been very good in the house and is fully house trained.  The couch is still his favorite place, and he looked so funny tonight, with his head hanging off.  He usually sleeps on the floor at night.  He is still putting on weight; he's around 55 pounds now.  He is very friendly, and loves to go up and greet people.

March 22, 2009...  Basil is full of love and affection.  He loves to snuggle up and gaze into my eyes or give me kisses.  He likes nothing better than to pile onto the couch with blankets, his fur sister and myself, and settle down for watching tv.  He is always happy and a good companion.  Cherokee loves having him around, and often, I will see the two wrestling gently or laying on top of each other on the couch.  He is such a good sport when she steals his rawhide bones.  His vision is pretty good for most things, and he loves to watch me with any kind of food.  He does try to hog my attention sometimes, and makes sure he is front and center, when I come home and the dogs are running around the house.  He play barks/talks sometimes when he is very happy.  Everyone thinks Basil is very handsome, and he is filling out and gaining weight.  He is also very friendly and loves to meet new people.  A mother and children stopped to pet him, and Basil unexpectedly gave the little boy a wet kiss.

In new pictures below, Basil is walking in Duke Forest, out in the yard, snuggling on the couch, and coming when called on the steps and in the house.

March 2, 2009...  Basil was a good mother hen to Cherokee, his foster fur sister, yesterday, when it was cold and raining.  After every walk, and they were back in the car, he licked the water off Cherokee's fur and helped her dry off.  He is such a sweet boy.

March 1, 2009...  Basil is a happy, sweet boxer, around 6 years old, who has made himself right at home with us.  He has put on weight the last few weeks, and is almost ready for his heartworm treatment.  Basil appears to have severely limited peripheral vision, and bumps into things sometimes, but usually can tell where he is going.  This means he will need a little extra help with his new family, but it doesn't seem to affect him that much.  He will look at me soulfully, to read my expression, and likes to stand and hug me.  Basil is delighted with his fur sister, Cherokee, and they love to box together.  He has tried to go after the neighbor cat several times, so he might be best in a house without cats.  I have corrected him "Cesar Milan" style, and he was very attentive, and wants my approval.  The first night I made popcorn, Basil came right up to me and demanded his share.  He loves to lie on the bed and the couch, but is also happy on his dog pillow.  He is adamant not to be left in the back yard.  He must have been left out with a previous owner.  Most of all, Basil is a lovebug who just wants love and affection.
